How does AdBlue work in a diesel vehicle?

When you drive a modern diesel vehicle, part of the emission control work happens without you even realizing it.

The engine produces exhaust gases containing various compounds, including nitrogen oxides. The SCR system then uses AdBlue to treat some of these emissions.

The liquid is automatically injected into the exhaust system. The driver does not choose when or how much is injected: the vehicle manages the dosage itself according to its needs.

AdBlue then allows the SCR system to trigger the necessary reactions to reduce NOx before the gases leave the exhaust.

This is why the AdBlue tank must contain enough product.

When the level becomes low, the vehicle generally displays a warning light or message. There are then a certain number of kilometers remaining before a refill becomes essential.

It is advisable not to wait until the tank is completely empty. Depending on the vehicle, a total lack of AdBlue can lead to restrictions and prevent restarting after the engine is turned off.

AdBlue is therefore an additional consumable, but it plays a role directly linked to the vehicle's emission treatment system.
